Gurdas Maan

Gurdas Maan was born in a Mann Jat Sikh family in Gidderbaha Muktsar, Punjab (India) on 4th january 1957.Gurdas Maan was formally educated in Malout. After completing his education there, his parents enrolled him into a further education institute in Patiala. As a keen sports enthusiast Gurdas was fascinated by the National Institute of Sports in the city, this prompted him to join the N.I.S and gain a Masters Degree in Physical Education.

During his time in Patiala, he went to the Sports University where he met his roommate Sudarshan Kumar. He took part in youth festivals organized by various universities and won several awards for his singing and acting, always supported by his friends. He competed in many athletic events and won medals including a bronze at the National Championship as well as achieving a black belt in judo.

Gurdas Maan is a Punjabi singer, songwriter, choreographer, and actor.Gurdas Maan gained national attention in India in 1980 with the song "Dil Da Mamala Hai". Since then he has gone on to record over 27 albums and has written over 200 songs.Gurdas Maan is a legendary Punjabi singer and is considered as the heart of Punjab.

Hans Raj Hans
Hans Raj Hans is a Punjabi singer born in a village called Shafipur near Jalandhar. He was born into a peasant family. He sings Punjabi Folk and Sufi music but has also sung in movies and released his own Indipop albums. Hans Raj Hans was born with singing talent. Though he was influenced by a street singer named Sitara Singh, who used to come near his house every day and sing Punjabi devotional songs. He would listen to him everyday. Hans was a devotee of Ustad Puran Shahkoti Sahib, from whom he had learned to sing since his teenager years. Ustad Puran Shahkoti Sahib is a sufi singer and it was because of him Hans learned to sing in Sufiana style. His guru gave him the surname 'Hans' probably due to his fair impressive look and his sweet singing voice like a 'Hans'.He has worked alongside other renowned artists such as the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, as seen in the movie "Kachhe Dhaage".

Mika Singh


Mika, born as Amrik Singh, born June 10, 1977, is a bhangra/rap singer. He is the younger brother of famous Punjabi singer Daler Mehndi. Mika is the youngest of the six Mehndi brothers. He left school at the age of eight and began to focus on singing, he says. His career evolved from kirtan singer to bhangra/pop artist. He gained much media attention for his kiss with Rakhi Sawant in June 2006.

Mika is also known for his large audiences at shows, sometimes as large as 60,000 people. He is one of most talented Punjabi singer who has marked his talent in Hindi playback singing also. Recently he has signed a film as an actor with Sunil Shetty's production house for a film named Loot. He has also composed and sung the famous song "Ganpat" from the film Shootout at Lokhandwala. Also, one of his songs, "Something Something" was a hit in India. He has also sung the hit song "Mauja Hi Mauja " from Jab We Met..

He has taken part in a couple of reality shows like Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa and Jhoom India. Mika is also set to release his 5th studio album in 2008 which is highly anticipated due to the involvement of Vikas Kohli and the work done at the Fatlabs studio in Canada.

Daler Mehndi

Daler Mehndi was born on August 18, 1967, is a bhangra/pop singer from India. Mehndi was a student of traditional Punjabi music and his first album broke sales records in India.

Since 1995 he has recorded several highly successful albums in India, and also sung in several Bollywood movies. His international popularity has grown in recent years allowing him to tour the United States.

Mehndi is well known as a philanthropist, funding beautification projects in Delhi and aiding earthquake victims.

As a Sikh, born and raised in Patna, he began singing at age 6 and was taught the ragas and Shabads from the Guru Granth Sahib by his parents.At age fourteen he spent three years refining his voice and learning the tabla, dholak/dhol, harmonium and tanpura from Raahat Ali Khan Saheb.

Mehndi married in 1986 and currently has three children. Mehndi then moved to San Francisco, United States and worked as a cab driver before returning to India in 1991 and forming a band.Initially he sang ghazals inspired by the poets Qateel Shifai and Firaq Gorakhpuri.In 1992 he was in a car accident that injured a jaywalking man who Mehndi then took to the hospital. Mehndi was sued as a result of the mishap.

Sukhbir Singh

Sukhbir Singh was born in 1969 at Jalandhar, Punjab but moved to Nairobi, Kenya at the age of one and a half. His father Raghbir Singh was a gyaniji (priest) at the local Gurudwara. There, young Sukhbir honed his singing skills practicing kirtans on the harmonium. This apprenticeship laid the groundwork for the musical side of his Bhangra career.His family spoke Punjabi at home, and his lyrical inspirations have also come from his childhood.He spent 20 years in Nairobi before returning to India. .In Nairobi, he was discovered by businessman Ketan Somaiyya, who suggested Sukhbir make a living with his music. Supported by his father, he began recording in 1996.He then moved to London for a year and a half, before moving to Dubai in 1994.

He is a Bhangra singer. He is often referred to as the "Prince of Bhangra". He is based out of Dubai and his Bhangra music varied from fusion to pure Punjabi at times.

His first album (New Stylee) was recorded in Dubai and had many foreign influences. Though he was nominated for many awards, at one point he was asked "Who's going to listen to this stuff in India?". The album though, was nominated for the 1996 Channel [V] Awards in three categories: Best Debut Album, Best Male Vocalist and Best Music Video (for "Punjabi Munde").He can sing in nine languages, and his album "Oi Triesto" has many Spanish and Portuguese vocals and music.

Sukhbir's unique Bhangra is a fusion of Bhangra with rap, techno and reggae. The juxtaposition of these musical styles is enhanced by Sukhbir's use of original Bhangra instruments like the dhol and dholak. In Oi Triesto, his music was complemented by Spanish and Portuguese rhythms, while he also uses instruments like: tablas, congos, guitars and keyboards in his music.

In the realm of Indian music, he cites Jagjit Singh as a big influence and said that if he wasn't doing Bhangra he would be a ghazal singer. He also stated that Daler Mehndi and Malkit Singh were his biggest competition in the Punjabi music market.He has also collaborated with Pakistani musicians such as Shehzad Roy. He has also sung a song with a popular Indian singer Shaan. He sung the song Dil laga from Dhoom 2. He has also sung a song with Indian band Josh. When the tsunami occurred he sung a song with Jassi Sidhu, Shin, DCS and Taz, stereo nation. He is back to singing now and his new album is Tere naal nachna.

Jazzy B

Jazzy B was born on April 1, 1975 as Jaswinder Singh Bains in Nawanshahr, Punjab, India, is a popular Bhangra artist who is easily recognized by fans of the genre with his spiky hair, stylish clothes, and the range and depth of his vocals.He moved to Vancouver, Canada at the age of five.

More recently an incident occurred at Bear Creek Park in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada where he was involved in a brawl with two males of East Indian descent regarding the credit of lyrics on his smash hit popular song, "Soorma." 'Ghugian Da Jorra', his successful debut album, was released in 1993 and instantly made him a star. Since then he has become the best-selling Bhangra artist in the world, helping bring the genre to the forefront of the Indian music scene.

He has worldwide appeal as he often tours Canada, England, India, the United States, and many other parts of the world where there is a large Desi population.

Babbu Maan
Babbu Maan was born in village Khant Maanpur district Fatehgarh Sahib of Punjab on 18 March, 1975. He was the youngest child among two sisters Rupi and Jassi and the only son of Babu Singh Maan (Senior).His real name is Tejinder Singh Maan.
Babbu Maan was very much fond of playing music since his childhood. He would see everything with the eyes of music as even to play with pans to create rhythmic sounds. He learned how to write lyrics, at college (Punjab University, Chandigarh) when he was about 16.He is the only Punjabi singer who sings his own lyrics in his own great music.
His first album was Tu Meri Miss India in 1999 which was a moderate hit. His second album Saaun Di Jhadi released in 2001 was his first highly successful album. It sold over ten million copies in India alone and many more overseas.His next album Pyaas was also a great hit and the album was also awarded as "Best Album Of Year".
